A great sunny day was had at Bletchley Park recently; the famous local site where Alan Turing and thousands of staff cracked the German Enigma code in the 2nd World War. The day involved a fascinating tour, lots of code breaking activities and a nice walk around the park followed by lunch and a chance for the younger ones in the group to play on the adventure playground.
24/7 living with type 1 diabetes has similarities to the Enigma code. Carbohydrates, stress, excitement, illness, heat, cold, growth hormones and exercise are all factors that can send blood sugars out of control - leading to hypoglycaemia or hyperglycaemia. Everyday living with type 1 diabetes, through frequent blood tests and insulin injections or insulin pumps while trying to regulate all these factors is rather like constantly trying to crack the Enigma Code. So in a way, all these people in the group are experienced code breakers!
